History

Named after the first Chief Journalist of the Coast Guard, author Alex Haley, who served with the Coast Guard for 20 years, the USCGC Haley is a re-commissioned naval vessel, the USS Edenton (ATS-1.)

The Edenton, originally a salvage and rescue ship, was laid down at Brooke Marine in March of 1967 and later launched in May of 1968. The Edenton was commissioned in March of 1971 and served in the Atlantic Ocean until her decommissioning by the Navy in 1996.

Acquired by the Coast Guard in November of 1997 and struck from the Naval Register in December of 1997, the Edenton was modified for cutter service at the Coast Guard Yard in Baltimore, MD by removing the ship?s original salvage and diving equipment and the installation of a retractable hangar, flight deck, and air search radar. In addition, her power plant was upgraded.

Conversion complete, the newly renamed USCGC Haley (WMEC-39), the first ship to be named for a journalist, was commissioned into the USCG in July 1999. Since commissioning the Haley has performed search and rescue and fisheries law enforcement duties from its homeport in Kodiak, Alaska.

The Haley is currently in commission and in active service.
